HAMILTON – After two blockbuster editions in Auckland, New Zealand’s premier Southeast Asia Festival is making its Hamilton debut on Saturday, 30 August 2025, at Claudelands Events Centre.

First introduced in 2003, the Southeast Asia Festival has grown into a dynamic celebration of food, travel, culture, and fashion — promoting greater understanding of New Zealand’s evolving multicultural mosaic.

This year’s festival holds special significance, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) – New Zealand Dialogue Relations, marking half a century of friendship and cooperation.

Adding to the occasion, the festival date aligns closely with Hari Merdeka (Malaysia’s Independence Day) on 31 August 2025. To celebrate, the organisers have teamed up with the vibrant Waikato Malaysian Society to present a special Independence Day programme, featuring:

A kompang (traditional drum) welcome

A silat martial arts demonstration

Traditional dances

Multicultural performances

Festivalgoers can also savour an authentic taste of Malaysia, with favourites such as nasi lemak, teh tarik, durian ice cream, mee goreng, and chicken curry puffs.

The spotlight will also shine on the Filipino community, the second-largest Asian group in New Zealand.

Visitors can enjoy a traditional Cordilleran dance performance alongside Filipino delicacies including halo-halo, ube ice cream and desserts (currently trending in New Zealand), and chicken inasal — the famous barbecue from Bacolod.

Beyond the food and performances, the festival offers:

Authentic Southeast Asian cuisine — rare heritage dishes, live traditional cooking, and countless ‘Instagrammable’ moments.

Cultural showcases — music and dance performances highlighting the region’s diversity.

Business & travel expo — connecting locals with Southeast Asian businesses, tourism opportunities, and community organisations.

“Southeast Asia has always been an attractive destination for Kiwis — from its tropical climate and stunning beaches to its vibrant street food and cultural richness,” says festival organiser Mel Fernandez, Multicultural Media & Events Strategist.

“Now, for the first time, Hamiltonians can experience all of this in one place. This is more than just a festival — it’s a celebration of community and connection on a scale the city hasn’t seen before.”

The free event runs from 10am to 6pm and is expected to draw large crowds from across Waikato and beyond.
