MANILA – Filipino folklore is set to make a major splash in Hollywood, thanks to a new animated feature in the works at DreamWorks Animation.
Although specific plot details are still under wraps, the story reportedly follows characters who stumble upon a mysterious, magical island inspired by the rich mythological traditions of the Philippines. The project is being helmed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the creative duo behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The film is currently scheduled for release in September 2026.
The concept of enchanted or hidden islands is deeply rooted in Filipino myths. One well-known legend tells of Biringan, a mythical city said to lie somewhere in Samar. This invisible city is believed to be home to engkanto—supernatural beings who occasionally lure humans into their world. According to local stories, fishermen have unknowingly drifted into Biringan after catching unusually large hauls, only to realize later they were no longer on the sea, but seemingly floating in midair.
Another lesser-known tale speaks of a hidden city between Passi and Dumarao in Iloilo. During the construction of the now-defunct Panay Railway, a worker was allegedly approached by a man from the mysterious Tumao tribe—described as having Mongolian features. The tribesman warned against building tracks through their territory. After sharing a lavish meal in a city unseen by others, the worker returned to find it vanished. Engineers later adjusted the railway path to avoid the area, which some believe explains the unusual curves in that stretch of track.
In Mindanao, legends point to a “lost island” called San Juan—said to lie northeast of the region. Early Philippine maps depicted the island and even illustrated its inhabitants. Over time, San Juan disappeared from maps entirely, leading some to believe it was a cartographic error, while others speculate it may have been an early reference to modern-day Siargao or Bucas Grande.
