Manny Pacquiao back in the ring at 46

Manny Pacquiao to Step Out of Retirement for WBC Title Fight Against Mario Barrios

MANILA – Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is set to return to the ring in July, stepping out of retirement to face American fighter Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight championship. The match is reportedly scheduled to take place on July 20 in Las Vegas, marking the Filipino legend’s first professional bout in nearly four years.

At 46, Pacquiao continues to defy expectations. Known for his lightning-quick footwork and unmatched punching speed, he remains the only boxer in history to win major world titles across eight weight divisions. His storied career includes 62 wins, eight losses, and two draws from 72 professional fights.

Pacquiao’s last official match was in 2021, when he attempted to reclaim the welterweight title against Yordenis Ugás. Though it was a competitive match, the unanimous decision went in Ugás’ favor, prompting Pacquiao to announce his retirement shortly after. Since then, he has participated in a few exhibition bouts, including against martial artist DK Yoo and Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo.

His opponent, Mario Barrios, holds a professional record of 29 wins, two losses, and one draw. Barrios captured the WBC welterweight crown in 2023 and most recently fought to a draw against Abel Ramos. Aged 29, Barrios represents a significant challenge for the veteran Pacquiao.

While the World Boxing Council has confirmed its intention to sanction the fight, Pacquiao’s final commitment may depend on the outcome of his political campaign. He is currently running for a Senate seat in the Philippines, with the national election taking place on May 12. Pacquiao previously served as a senator from 2016 to 2022 and made a bid for the presidency in 2022, finishing third.

The anticipated July bout comes just a month after Pacquiao is scheduled to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on June 8 – a symbolic moment that highlights both his legendary status and the unusual timing of his comeback.

Boxing observers and former competitors have expressed mixed feelings about Pacquiao’s decision. Amir Khan, who was once rumoured to fight Pacquiao during their careers, voiced concerns about the risks involved in facing a much younger, active champion like Barrios. “If they were both in their prime, Manny would win easily. But this could be a tricky and dangerous fight for him,” Khan said in an interview.

Despite the risks, Pacquiao’s return is expected to generate global attention and strong pay-per-view interest.

For Filipino fans around the world, the announcement reignites excitement and national pride. Whether or not he reclaims championship gold, Pacquiao’s legacy as a sporting hero and symbol of Filipino resilience is already secured.

As one of the Philippines’ most beloved athletes and public figures, Manny Pacquiao continues to prove that he is never truly out of the fight – both in the ring and in public service.
