This is the first ever online celebration of Philippine Independence Day in New Zealand (www.pinoynz.live)

In coordination with the Philippine Embassy, Filipino News NZ will feature on its website contributions from the community, from the recent anti-bullying video featuring Filipino-Kiwi talent to the 2020 Filipino-Kiwi Hero Awards recognizing our front liners and other outstanding kababayan in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We will be giving you the best of Filipino music, culture, fashion and food, including Luntian NZ, Vegan cuisine, Filipino style, the Ambassador’s cup, a sports initiative, Embassy programs such as the Philippine Embassy’s Volunteer Ambassadors for tourism, youth, entrepreneurship and the women’s refuge campaigns.

Together we will joyously celebrate our move to Level 1, having vanquished COVID-19 and flattenin the curve together of racism as one Filipino community, one with Aotearoa New Zealand.

Maraming salamat po. Mabuhay ang Filipino News NZ!

CELEBRATING Philippine Independence Day 2020 IN NZ:

By Mel Fernandez

FLASHBACK:  On June 12, 1898, Filipino revolutionary forces led by General Emilio Aguinaldo publicly read the Act of the Declaration of Independence in Kawit, Cavite, that proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippines from the colonial rule of Spain, following Spain’s defeat at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

The first Independence Day event included the unveiling of the National Flag of the Philippines and a performance of ‘Lupang Hinirang’, the national anthem.

How will your family celebrate the 122nd Philippine Independence Day?

In past years you may have been invited to attend some of the ‘traditional ceremonies’ – the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Philippine Embassy in Wellington or the Wreath Laying at Rizal Reserve, Corregidor Place, in Avondale, Auckland or one of many other celebrations nationwide.

Filipino News NZ used to organise a grand celebration each year – Filipino Kiwi Hero Awards www.filipinoheroes.nz, Maginoo at Binibining Cultural Pageant and a street food festival.

This year however we celebrate the launch of the first Filipino News channel in NZ: www.pinoynz.live and an online celebration of PH Independence Day 2020!
